Statins and Testosterone
If you don't think of testosterone when you hear the word "cholesterol," you aren't alone. However, testosterone and cholesterol are closely related.
But if you face a sexual disorder, it doesn't necessarily mean your low testosterone is to blame. According to the Mayo Clinic, erectile dysfunction (ED) is sometimes a precursor to heart problems. Coronary artery disease caused by high levels of bad cholesterol can also affect men's erectile function due to reduced blood flow to the area.
If the cause of ED is testosterone-based, some other indicators are hair loss and depression. Unfortunately, low testosterone levels can negatively affect cholesterol levels, leading to plaque buildup. However, studies show as testosterone increases, cholesterol decreases.
If you have high cholesterol, your doctor may recommend a statin. About 30% of Americans 40 years and older take a statin to lower cholesterol levels. While it is true that those prescribed the medication might also experience lower testosterone and other hormones, several studies report that it's only by 3 to 4%. However, statins can reduce LDL cholesterol by a whopping 50%.
So what's the best option? Only you and your doctor can decide whether cholesterol-cutting statins are the right choice for you. Like millions of others, if you are taking statins to reduce your risk of heart disease, you can help naturally maintain healthy levels of testosterone with these daily habits.
- Get your beauty rest. Sleep plays a big role in hormone production and regulation. Try to get at least seven hours a night. A study presented at the American Urological Association revealed that men with sleep apnea were 50 percent more likely to have low testosterone levels.
- Stay active. Your body uses testosterone to fuel movement. When you stop moving, it doesn't see a reason to produce as much testosterone. Try to be active for at least 30 minutes a day.
- Eat well. Certain foods, including garlic, nuts and beans, can boost testosterone production.
- Try zinc. Men who get enough zinc are less likely to suffer from low testosterone.
- Pump iron. Lifting weights can stimulate testosterone production.
