General Surgeon joins Medical Staff

Rose Chan, MD, FACS, a board certified general surgeon and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, has joined the Lower Keys Medical Center active medical staff.  For the past eight years, Dr. Chan has been a surgeon in private practice in northeast Ohio.  She was also involved in medical education and leadership roles for several professional organizations, including the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the American Cancer Society.

As a general surgeon, she performs a broad range of surgical and minimally invasive procedures, including upper and lower endoscopies, oncologic staging, and endocrine, pancreatic, colorectal, and hepatobiliary surgery.  Specialty areas of interest include thyroid and parathyroid surgery and treatment of skin and breast cancer.

An experienced surgeon, Dr. Chan makes extra effort to ensure that her patients have excellent outcomes and quality of life. She takes a comprehensive approach to care throughout the entire process from evaluation to post-operative care, providing surgical nutrition and critical care management.  She asserts, “Carefully managing every aspect of the patient’s care is crucial for a good outcome.”

Whether it’s a complicated or simple procedure, she insists that her patients remain diligent about following up with their post-operative medical care.  In return for her dedicated efforts, her patients experience very low rates of surgical complications.  Dr. Chan feels a strong sense of personal responsibility towards each of her patients and her philosophy is that “a cancer patient should be followed for life by their surgeon.”

Dr. Chan has volunteered her time and expertise in a number of leading organizations.  For almost five years, she served as Cancer Liaison Physician, an appointment made by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.  In this role, she was responsible for providing the leadership and direction to support her hospital’s cancer program.  She received the Cancer Liaison Physician Outstanding Performance Award in 2006 (bestowed to only the top 3% of physicians in this network) for improving and strengthening the quality of care delivered at her hospital, and demonstrating cancer control leadership in the community.

Dedicated to the educational and training aspects of her profession, Dr. Chan is committed to Continuing Medical Education (CME) for physicians.  She has served as a member of the CME committee of SAGES since 2004.  She also served as Vice President of the Lorain County Physician CME Consortium and Co-Director of Medical Education for the Lorain County Medical Society.  In this position, she coordinated an annual CME program on a variety of surgical issues for primary care physicians, nurses, and surgeons.  She firmly believes that lifelong learning and current knowledge are crucial for doctors, and plans to continue her involvement with post-graduate continuing medical education for physicians.

Dr. Chan views surgery as a blend of art and science.  Humans are not machines, and they require more than a strict scientific approach.  The art of good clinical judgment is developed by giving each patient the time and attention they need.  “I see each patient as a whole person and not just an ailing body part.  A great surgeon knows when to operate and when not to.”
